What is ad strength?

Also known as: ad strength rating · rsa ad strength · asset strength

TL;DR

Ad strength is a rating from Poor to Excellent that Google assigns to a responsive search ad based on how many assets you provide and how diverse they are. It measures inputs, not results. A higher rating correlates loosely with more auction eligibility, but it is not a performance metric and should never override what actually converts.

How ad strength works

Ad strength evaluates a responsive search ad on the assets you supply: the number of headlines and descriptions, how distinct they are from one another, and whether they include your keywords. Provide three near-identical headlines and the rating stays low, provide a rich, varied set covering different benefits and angles and it climbs toward Excellent. The rating updates live as you edit, so it functions as a real-time completeness check on the creative you are feeding the system.

What ad strength does not measure

Ad strength says nothing about whether the ad converts. It is entirely about the inputs, so an Excellent ad can underperform a Good one that happens to carry a sharper offer. Google itself frames ad strength as guidance on asset variety, not as a performance guarantee. Treating it as a KPI leads to padding ads with generic headlines that lift the rating while diluting the message, which is exactly backwards. The useful signal is at the low end: a Poor rating usually does mean you have starved the ad of assets.

Using ad strength well

The productive approach is to use ad strength to avoid the Poor and Average traps, then let conversion data take over. Give the ad a genuinely varied asset set so the system has raw material to test, aim for Good or better, and stop there. Do not sacrifice a proven, specific headline to hit Excellent, and do not add filler assets that weaken the message. Pin sparingly, because heavy pinning limits the combinations Google can test and often drags the rating down for a good reason.

How iClick uses ad strength

iClick uses ad strength as a completeness check, not a target, treating Poor and Average as prompts to add asset variety and treating conversion data as the real judge past Good. The rule is that a specific, proven headline is never dropped to chase Excellent, and filler is never added to inflate the rating. Ad strength describes how much raw material the system has to test, and that is worth getting to a healthy level, but it does not describe what customers respond to.

ad strength vs Responsive search ads

Responsive search ads are the ad format that mixes your assets into combinations. Ad strength is the rating that tells you whether you have supplied enough varied assets for that mixing to work.

FAQ

Common questions

Ad strength is guidance on asset variety and is not itself an ad rank factor. Ad rank is set in the auction by your bid, Quality Score, and other factors. A stronger, more varied ad can improve relevance indirectly.
