What is Broad Match?

Also known as: broad match keywords · keyword match types

TL;DR

Broad match is the widest of Google's keyword match types. A broad match keyword can trigger your ad on searches Google judges related to it, including synonyms, related topics, and intent variations, not just the exact words. Modern broad match leans on Smart Bidding and account signals to decide which of those searches are worth entering.

How broad match actually works

Google offers three match types. Exact match triggers on the keyword's meaning closely. Phrase match triggers when the meaning is included in the query. Broad match casts the widest net, letting your ad show on any search Google considers related, including synonyms, implied intent, and topics adjacent to your keyword. Where broad match once meant loose word-matching, it now uses the account's conversion history, audience signals, and the landing page to judge relevance, which makes it far more capable and far more dependent on good data than it used to be.

Why modern broad match needs Smart Bidding

Broad match and Smart Bidding are designed to work as a pair. Broad match finds the queries; Smart Bidding decides, auction by auction, which are worth bidding on and how much. Run broad match on manual bids and you get its width with none of its judgement, which is how accounts hemorrhage budget on tangential searches. Run it with a well-fed Smart Bidding strategy and accurate conversion tracking, and the model uses the extra reach to find profitable queries you would never have thought to add as keywords.

The risk broad match carries

Width is the whole point and the whole danger. Without guardrails, broad match will enter auctions for searches that share a topic but not your intent: a keyword for a premium service matching bargain-hunting queries, or a B2B term matching consumer searches. Each irrelevant click spends money and pollutes the conversion data the bidding model learns from. The search terms report is where this shows up, and ignoring it is how a broad match campaign slowly trains itself on the wrong audience while the dashboard still looks busy.

The guardrails that make broad match safe

iClick only runs broad match inside a fence. That means a Smart Bidding strategy fed by verified conversion tracking, a disciplined negative-keyword list built and pruned from the search terms report every week, and tight campaign themes so the model has a clear intent to expand from. Broad match is powerful when the account gives it good signals and firm boundaries. It is a budget leak when it is switched on and left alone. The match type is not the risk; the absence of guardrails is.

Broad Match vs Negative Keywords

Broad match opens the account to related searches. Negative keywords are the fence that keeps the irrelevant ones out. You should never run one without the other.

FAQ

Common questions

Neither is universally better. Broad match with Smart Bidding finds reach and new queries; exact match gives tight control. Most healthy accounts use a mix, with broad match fenced by negatives and automated bidding.
