What is CPA (Cost per Acquisition)?

Also known as: cost per acquisition · cost per action · cost per conversion

TL;DR

CPA is the average cost to generate one conversion, calculated as ad spend divided by conversions. A CPA of $45 means each conversion cost 45 dollars. The conversion can be a sale, a lead, or a signup, so a CPA is only meaningful once you know what action it counts and what that action is worth.

How CPA actually works

CPA divides what you spent by the conversions you got. Its usefulness lives entirely in the definition of a conversion. If the conversion is a purchase, CPA is close to a per-order acquisition cost. If it is a newsletter signup, a 5 dollar CPA might be excellent or a waste, depending on how many of those signups ever buy. The most common CPA mistake is comparing numbers across campaigns that count different conversion actions, which is like comparing prices without knowing what is being sold.

CPA vs CAC: conversions are not customers

CPA is cost per conversion event. CAC is cost per paying customer, and it usually folds in fees, salaries, and software on top of media. They match only when every conversion is a first-time purchase and media is your only cost. In a lead-gen or SaaS funnel they can be an order of magnitude apart: a 30 dollar lead CPA can sit under a 700 dollar CAC once close rates and blended costs are counted. Use CPA to optimise the media, and CAC to judge the business.

How margin sets your maximum CPA

A safe CPA is not a number you copy from a benchmark; it is one you derive from unit economics. Take the gross profit a conversion produces, decide what share of it you are willing to spend to acquire it, and that ceiling is your maximum CPA. A product with 60 dollars of gross profit can sustain a far higher CPA than one with 12. iClick sets a maximum allowable CPA per conversion action before launch, so bidding always has a profit-anchored ceiling rather than an arbitrary target.

tCPA: turning a CPA goal into automated bids

Target CPA bidding hands Google or Meta a cost-per-conversion goal and lets the model bid toward it, raising bids on auctions likely to convert cheaply and lowering them elsewhere. It works best when conversions are roughly equal in value; when values vary widely, target ROAS usually fits better. As with any Smart Bidding strategy, a tCPA set far below the account's proven cost per conversion does not conjure efficiency, it simply throttles volume until only the surest conversions remain.

CPA (Cost per Acquisition) vs CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)

CPA is cost per conversion event and lives in the ad account. CAC is cost per paying customer and lives in the P and L.
