What is CTR (Click-Through Rate)?

Also known as: click-through rate · clickthrough rate

TL;DR

CTR is the percentage of people who click your ad after seeing it, calculated as clicks divided by impressions. A CTR of 5 percent means 5 of every 100 people who saw the ad clicked it. On search it is a core input to Quality Score, so it influences not just volume but the price you pay per click.

How CTR actually works

CTR measures how compelling your ad is relative to everything around it. Divide clicks by impressions and you get the rate at which attention turns into action. What counts as good is entirely contextual: a branded search ad might earn 15 percent because the searcher typed your name, while a cold display ad might sit near 0.1 percent and still be healthy for its placement. Comparing CTR across search, social, and display without accounting for intent and format is meaningless, which is why benchmarks are only useful within a channel and audience type.

Why CTR feeds Quality Score

On Google, expected click-through rate is one of the three components of Quality Score, alongside ad relevance and landing page experience. A higher CTR tells the auction your ad matches the query, which raises Quality Score, which in turn lowers your CPC and lifts your position. This is why CTR is not just a vanity number on search: it directly discounts what you pay. iClick treats improving CTR through tighter ad-to-keyword relevance as one of the cheapest ways to bring CPC down at the same position.

When a high CTR still loses money

A clickbait headline or an over-broad match can post a beautiful CTR while sending unqualified traffic that never converts. Every one of those clicks costs money and drags down conversion rate. The opposite also happens: a precise ad that discourages the wrong clicks can show a lower CTR and a far better cost per acquisition. CTR is a means, not an end. A rising CTR only matters if conversion rate and CPA hold or improve alongside it.

How to improve CTR without buying junk clicks

The durable levers are relevance and specificity: match ad copy to the exact search intent, use the query language in the headline, add the assets and sitelinks that make the ad larger and more useful, and prune the keywords or placements that pull mismatched impressions. The goal is not the highest possible CTR but the highest CTR among people likely to convert. A tightly themed ad group almost always beats a broad one on both CTR and the metrics downstream of it.

CTR (Click-Through Rate) vs Conversion Rate

CTR measures whether the ad earns the click. Conversion rate measures whether the click earns the sale. You need both to make money.

FAQ

Common questions

It depends entirely on channel and intent. Branded search can exceed 10 to 15 percent, non-branded search often sits in the low single digits, and display or awareness placements can be healthy well below 1 percent. Benchmark only within the same channel and audience.
