Google Ads cost, explained9 min read

How much do Google Ads cost?

Google Ads costs whatever you budget: no flat fee or subscription, and on Search you pay per click. The average click costs $5.42 across industries (LocaliQ, 2026). To size a budget, divide the sales you want by your conversion rate and multiply by cost per click: 50 sales at 2.1% and $1.15 is about $2,738 a month.

TL;DR

Google Ads costs whatever you budget: no flat fee or subscription, and on Search you pay per click. The average click costs $5.42 across industries (LocaliQ, 2026). To size a budget, divide the sales you want by your conversion rate and multiply by cost per click: 50 sales at 2.1% and $1.15 is about $2,738 a month.

The short answer

Google Ads has no set price. You choose a daily budget, and on Search you are charged only when someone clicks your ad. Google's own explanation is that there are no flat fees or monthly subscriptions, so a business can spend a few hundred dollars a month or several hundred thousand.

What a click costs varies widely. Across industries, the average cost per click on search ads is $5.42 in LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks, ranging from $1.63 in arts and entertainment to $9.87 for attorneys and legal services. In the ecommerce accounts iClick runs, the average is lower: $1.15 in fashion and $1.42 in health and beauty, from our PPC benchmarks report.

The number that matters

Cost per click only tells you the price of traffic. What decides whether Google Ads is affordable is the cost per sale or lead, which depends on how many clicks convert.

How Google Ads pricing works

Every search triggers an auction among the advertisers bidding on it. Google ranks the ads by Ad Rank, which it calculates from your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, the competitiveness of the auction, the context of the search (location, device, time and the search terms themselves) and the expected impact of your assets.

You rarely pay your maximum bid. Google charges the actual cost per click, which is only what is needed to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the advertiser ranked just below you. That is why a more relevant ad can win a higher position at a lower price than a competitor bidding more.

Search ads are priced per click. Other formats use different models: display and some video campaigns can be bought per thousand impressions, and video ads per view.

Shopping ads are also charged per click, through the same auction. Performance Max spreads one budget across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and Google's other inventory, so its average cost per click blends placements that are priced very differently. Compare it with your Search and Shopping campaigns on cost per sale, not cost per click.

Average cost per click by industry

These are average search CPCs from LocaliQ's 2026 Search Advertising Benchmarks, based on thousands of its customers' Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns:

Attorneys and legal services: $9.87. Home and home improvement: $8.33. Dentists and dental services: $8.00. Health and fitness: $6.17. Business services: $5.87. Beauty and personal care: $4.62. Apparel, fashion and jewelry: $4.44. Shopping, collectibles and gifts: $4.14. Finance and insurance: $3.39. Real estate: $3.22. Travel: $2.14. Arts and entertainment: $1.63.

For comparison, the accounts iClick manages average $2.32 per click on Google Search across all industries, and $1.15 to $1.42 in our ecommerce verticals. Ours run lower mainly because of the mix: most of our spend is ecommerce, where product searches are cheaper than the local service categories that dominate LocaliQ's data. Treat any average as a starting point, not a quote.

What drives your cost per click

Competition is the biggest factor. Keywords where a single customer is worth a lot, such as legal or home services, attract more bidders and higher prices.

Quality is the one you control most. Because Ad Rank weighs ad relevance and landing-page experience alongside the bid, a well-matched ad and page can pay less for the same position. Our Quality Score entry explains the components.

Context changes the price too: the searcher's location, device and time of day all feed the auction. So does seasonality, as more advertisers compete in peak periods such as the run-up to Black Friday. Finally, your bid strategy sets how aggressively Google bids on your behalf.

How much should you budget?

Work backwards from the result you need rather than picking a number. The formula is: monthly budget equals target conversions, divided by conversion rate, multiplied by cost per click.

A worked ecommerce example using our published fashion averages (a $1.15 CPC and a 2.10% conversion rate): 50 sales a month needs about 2,381 clicks (50 divided by 0.021), which costs about $2,738 a month (2,381 multiplied by $1.15). Swap in your own numbers with the PPC budget calculator.

Then check that the cost per sale is affordable. In this example it is about $55. If your average order earns less than that in contribution margin, the budget is buying sales at a loss. The break-even ROAS calculator shows the line for your margin, and our guide on how to set a PPC budget covers splitting it across campaigns.

Give it enough budget to learn

A budget so small it buys a handful of clicks a day cannot tell you anything. Fund a test with enough clicks to produce conversions you can judge.

How daily budgets and billing work

You set an average daily budget for each campaign. On a busy day Google can spend up to twice that amount to catch extra traffic, but across a month it will not charge more than 30.4 times your average daily budget, roughly the number of days in an average month. A $100 daily budget therefore means a monthly cap of about $3,040.

If ads overdeliver beyond those limits, Google does not bill you for the excess.

Ad spend vs management fees

The figures above are ad spend, the money that goes to Google. If an agency or freelancer runs the account, their fee is separate and comes on top. Fees are usually a percentage of ad spend, a flat monthly retainer or a mix of the two. Our PPC management pricing guide breaks those models down.

How to lower what you pay

Improve relevance first: tightly themed ad groups, ads that repeat the searcher's words, and landing pages that deliver what the ad promised. That lifts Ad Rank, which can lower the price of each position.

Cut the waste: review the search terms report regularly and add negative keywords for searches that never convert. Our workflows on lowering cost per click and reducing wasted ad spend go step by step.

Finally, judge success on cost per sale rather than cost per click. A cheaper click that never converts is the most expensive one in the account.

Common questions

It can be enough to test in a low-cost niche, not to scale. $10 a day is about $304 a month, which buys around 264 clicks at a $1.15 CPC. At a 2.1% conversion rate that is five or six sales. In a category where clicks cost $9.87, the same budget buys about 30 clicks.
