Conversion rate is the share of clicks (or visits) that turn into a sale, lead or other action you count. For definitions and how platforms count conversions, see our glossary entry on conversion rate.
| Step | Example | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Conversions | 45 | Google Ads: Conversions |
| Clicks | 1,200 | Google Ads: Clicks |
| Conversion rate | 45 ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 3.75% | Google Ads: Conv. rate |
What a one-point lift is worth
Conversion rate is the cheapest lever in an account, because it changes results without changing spend. At a fixed $1,800 and 1,200 clicks, moving from 3.75% to 4.75% turns 45 conversions into 57 (1,200 × 0.0475), and the cost per acquisition falls from $40 to $31.58 (1,800 ÷ 57). The “Lift” mode above works this out for your own numbers.
The usual places to find that lift are the landing page and the offer, covered in PPC conversion optimization. If conversions are rising but the leads are poor, see how to fix poor lead quality before celebrating.
Conversion rate questions
How do you calculate conversion rate?
Divide conversions by clicks (or by visitors, for a landing page) and multiply by 100. 45 conversions from 1,200 clicks is a 3.75% conversion rate.
Should I divide by clicks or by visitors?
Use the one that matches the question. Ad platforms report conversions per click, which is right for judging a campaign. Analytics tools report conversions per session or visitor, which is right for judging a landing page. Don't mix the two in one comparison.
What is a one-point lift in conversion rate worth?
At the same spend and clicks, every extra point of conversion rate is more conversions for free. With $1,800 and 1,200 clicks, going from 3.75% to 4.75% means 57 conversions instead of 45, and the CPA drops from $40 to $31.58.
What is a good conversion rate?
It varies by industry, offer and what counts as a conversion. For reference, the Google Search accounts iClick manages average 3.48%. Your own trend over time matters more than any average.
