How the GCLID works
When auto-tagging is enabled, Google appends a gclid parameter to the destination URL of every click, so a visitor lands on a page carrying a unique string that identifies that specific click. The conversion tag on your site reads and stores that GCLID, usually in a cookie and often in a hidden form field. When the visitor converts, the GCLID travels with the conversion, and Google matches it back to the campaign, ad group, keyword, device, and auction that produced the click. It is the thread that ties a downstream outcome to its exact source.
GCLID and offline conversions
For lead-gen businesses, the sale often happens days or weeks after the click, in a CRM or over the phone, not on the website. Offline conversion import solves this by sending the GCLID captured at form submission back to Google Ads once the lead becomes a booked deal, along with the value and timestamp. This is how a law firm or a B2B SaaS company teaches Smart Bidding to optimise toward signed clients rather than raw form fills. Without a preserved GCLID, there is nothing to match the offline conversion to.
How the GCLID gets lost
The GCLID is fragile in predictable ways. A mid-funnel redirect that strips query parameters, a form that does not capture the hidden field, a CRM that discards the value, or a consent tool that blocks the cookie all sever the chain. The symptom is offline imports that Google rejects as unmatched, or a suspiciously low match rate. Because the failure is silent, the only reliable defence is testing the full path from click to CRM record and confirming the GCLID survives every hop.
How iClick protects the GCLID
iClick treats the GCLID as the backbone of lead-gen measurement and tests its survival end to end before trusting any offline import. The method is to confirm auto-tagging is on, verify the conversion tag captures the GCLID into a hidden field, check that the CRM stores it against the lead, and validate the import match rate after the fact. The rule is simple: if the GCLID does not reach the CRM record, offline conversion tracking is not really running, no matter what the setup screen says.
