What is a PQL (Product Qualified Lead)?

Also known as: product qualified lead · product-qualified lead

TL;DR

A PQL is a lead who has used your product, usually through a free trial or freemium plan, and reached a milestone that signals real value and buying intent. Unlike an MQL, which is scored on marketing engagement, a PQL is defined by product usage. It is the core qualification signal of product-led growth companies.

How a PQL actually works

A PQL is qualified by what a user has done inside the product, not by what content they consumed. A team reaches a PQL definition by identifying the usage milestones that correlate with conversion, such as inviting teammates, hitting a usage volume, or completing a core workflow, then flagging any free user who crosses them. The signal is powerful because it is behavioural and hard to fake: a user who has integrated your tool into their work and felt its value is a fundamentally warmer prospect than one who merely downloaded a guide.

Why usage beats engagement

An MQL says a person engaged with your marketing. A PQL says a person got value from your product. The second is a far better predictor of purchase, because the user has already experienced what they would be paying for. In product-led companies, PQLs typically convert at much higher rates than marketing-sourced leads, which is why the whole motion is built to drive signups into the product and let usage do the qualifying. The product becomes the primary sales tool, and the PQL is how you know it worked.

Defining a PQL that actually predicts revenue

The hard part is choosing the right milestone. A too-shallow trigger, such as simply signing up, floods the pipeline with tourists; a too-deep one fires so late the buying moment has passed. The reliable method is to analyse which early behaviours the converting customers had in common and set the PQL bar there, then revisit it as data grows. iClick treats the PQL definition the way it treats a conversion goal in an ad account: get it wrong and everything downstream, including the ads optimised toward signups, optimises toward the wrong user.

How PQLs change paid acquisition

For a PLG business, the ad account's job is usually to drive qualified free signups cheaply, then let the product convert them, so the near-term conversion is a signup and the true north is the PQL. Feeding PQL and paid-conversion data back into the ad platform lets bidding favour the audiences whose signups actually activate, not just the cheapest signups. Optimising a PLG account to raw trial starts alone is a classic trap: it rewards volume of tourists over the users who reach value and buy.

a PQL (Product Qualified Lead) vs MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead)

An MQL is scored on marketing engagement. A PQL is proven by product usage. For product-led companies the PQL is the stronger buying signal by a wide margin.

Common questions

An MQL is qualified on marketing engagement like downloads and page visits. A PQL is qualified on real product usage, such as reaching an activation milestone in a free trial. Usage is a stronger predictor of purchase than engagement.
