TL;DR: A Shopify Google Shopping setup has three layers: a clean Merchant Center feed, one deduplicated purchase conversion, and server-side signals. Get all three right before you bid. iClick data shows a 12% feed disapproval rate in unmanaged accounts. Meta reports Conversions API users see 17.8% lower cost per result.
What a complete Shopify Google Shopping setup includes
A working setup has three layers. The feed tells Google what you sell. Tracking tells Google what sold. Server-side signals fill the gaps that browsers leave behind.
On Google, those server-side signals come from enhanced conversions. On Meta, they come from the Conversions API, usually shortened to CAPI.
Most Shopify stores get the first layer half right and the other two wrong. The result is products that show, clicks that cost money, and a bidding algorithm working from a partial picture of revenue.
This guide covers all three layers in the order we build them. It is written for store owners and in-house marketers who want to set it up once and trust the numbers.
Before you start, you need four things: a Shopify store on a paid plan, a Google Merchant Center account, a Google Ads account, and admin access to all three. If you also run Meta ads, add a Meta Business Manager with a pixel.
Why setup matters more than the campaign
Shopping campaigns have no keywords. Google matches search queries to your product data, so the feed is your targeting.
Bidding then optimizes against whatever conversion value your tracking reports. If that number is wrong, every bid built on it is wrong too.
That makes setup errors expensive in two directions. A weak feed limits which searches you can win. Broken tracking tells the algorithm the wrong products are profitable.
Here is what good looks like in accounts we manage. Across iClick-managed accounts, well-managed Shopping campaigns average a 0.86% CTR, a 1.91% conversion rate, and a 480% ROAS. The same data shows a 12% feed disapproval rate in unmanaged accounts.
Put simply, roughly one product in eight is invisible in an unmanaged account before a single bid is placed.

Those figures come from real accounts we run, not industry surveys. You can see them broken out by vertical on the iClick 2026 PPC benchmarks page. For what a healthy return looks like at your margin, read our guide to Good ROAS for eCommerce: Benchmarks by Category, Margin, and Channel.
Build the product feed
Connect Shopify to Merchant Center
Install the free Google & YouTube app from the Shopify App Store. Sign in with the Google account that owns your Merchant Center, then link that account inside the app.
The app syncs your catalog to Merchant Center automatically. Product edits in Shopify flow through without a manual upload. That ongoing sync is the main reason to use the app instead of a spreadsheet feed.
Verify and claim your store domain during onboarding. Merchant Center will not approve products for a website it cannot verify.
Next, set shipping and return policies inside Merchant Center. Missing shipping information is a common cause of disapprovals, and it is easy to fix on day one.
Fix titles first
In our experience, the title does more for query matching than any other attribute. Google’s Merchant Center product data specification allows up to 150 characters per title.
The same documentation notes that shoppers usually notice only the first 70 or fewer characters, depending on screen size. So front-load the words people actually search.
A useful pattern for apparel is brand, product type, gender, color, and size. For hard goods, try brand, product, model, and one key spec.
Compare two titles for the same shoe:
- Before: “Midnight Runner”
- After: “Acme Men’s Trail Running Shoe, Waterproof, Black, Size 10”
The first title only matches shoppers who already know the product name. The second matches brand, category, feature, color, and size queries at once.
Map the attributes Shopify does not send cleanly
The Google & YouTube app pulls the standard fields: title, description, price, image, availability, and link. Several other attributes need deliberate work.
- GTIN. Enter the barcode in Shopify’s Barcode field on every variant. Branded products without a GTIN can lose visibility.
- Brand. The app reads the Vendor field. Make sure Vendor holds your brand name, not your supplier’s.
- Product category. Set the Shopify product category on each item so it maps to Google’s product taxonomy.
- Apparel attributes. Color, size, gender, and age group are required for apparel in several countries. Supply them through variant options or metafields.
- Custom labels. Use custom_label_0 through custom_label_4 for margin tier, bestseller status, season, or price band. You will split campaigns by these later.
The native app gives you limited control over custom labels and title rewrites. The cheapest fix is a supplemental feed in Merchant Center: a Google Sheet keyed by product ID that adds or overrides attributes.
Stores with large or complex catalogs often add a feed tool such as DataFeedWatch, Feedonomics, or Simprosys. Those tools let you write rules once instead of editing thousands of products by hand.
Clear disapprovals before you spend
Open the product issues view in Merchant Center and sort by the number of affected items. Fix account-level issues first, then item-level ones.
On Shopify stores, the usual suspects are consistent:
- Price mismatches caused by discount apps or currency converters.
- Images with text overlays, watermarks, or promotional badges.
- Missing GTINs on branded products.
- Landing pages that redirect shoppers by location.
Price mismatches deserve extra attention. If a discount app changes the price on page load but the feed still shows the old price, Google flags the product. Repeated mismatches can escalate to an account-level warning.
Aim for zero disapprovals on your top sellers before launch. Every disapproved product is inventory that earns nothing, no matter how good your bids are.
Set up Google Ads conversion tracking on Shopify
The feed gets you shown. Tracking decides what the algorithm learns. On Shopify, tracking mistakes are more common than feed mistakes because there are several overlapping ways to install the same tag.
Use one source of purchase truth
Link your Google Ads account inside the Google & YouTube app. The app installs the Google tag and sets up a purchase conversion that passes the order value.
Then audit for duplicates. These are the sources we find most often on Shopify stores:
- An old Google Ads tag pasted into theme code or legacy checkout scripts.
- A GA4 purchase event imported into Google Ads and also set as primary.
- A third-party tracking app firing its own purchase conversion.
- A Google Tag Manager container added through a custom pixel.
In Google Ads, open Goals, then Conversions, then Summary. Only one purchase action should be marked primary. Set every other purchase action to secondary so it still reports but no longer drives bidding.
Double counting is the most expensive silent error we see. If two primary actions each record the same $100 order, bidding sees $200 in revenue.
Your reported ROAS doubles overnight. The algorithm then bids up products that are only half as profitable as they look.
Turn on enhanced conversions
Enhanced conversions send hashed first-party data, such as the customer’s email address, alongside the conversion tag. Google matches that data to signed-in users to recover conversions that cookies miss.
Google reports that early adopters of enhanced conversions saw a median conversion rate increase of 5% on Search and 17% on YouTube. That lift reflects better measurement, not new buyers. Better measurement still produces better bids.
Confirm enhanced conversions is switched on for your primary purchase action in Google Ads conversion settings. After a few days of orders, check the diagnostics tab for that action. It shows whether customer data is arriving and matching.
Handle consent if you sell into Europe
If you sell into the EEA or the UK, connect Google Consent Mode v2 to your cookie banner. Shopify’s Customer Privacy API passes the shopper’s consent choice to the Google tag, as long as your banner app supports it.
Skip this and your Google Ads account can lose remarketing and measurement features for those regions.
Test with a real order
Place a test order with a real card and a discount code, then refund it. Confirm three things: the conversion appears once, the value matches the amount you expect, and the currency is correct.
Decide your value rule now. Most stores should report revenue excluding tax and shipping. Whichever rule you pick, use the same definition in Google Ads, in Meta, and in your ROAS math.

Add Meta Conversions API through Shopify
Google Shopping rarely runs alone. Most Shopify brands also buy Meta ads, and Meta’s browser pixel loses events to ad blockers, iOS privacy settings, and cookie limits.
The Conversions API sends the same events from the server instead of the browser. On April 15, 2026, Meta reported that advertisers with a Conversions API setup for web events saw an average 17.8% lower cost per result than advertisers without one.
Turn on maximum data sharing
Install Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app. Connect your Business Manager, ad account, and pixel.
In the app’s customer data sharing settings, choose Maximum. That level sends events through both the browser pixel and the Conversions API.
Meta deduplicates events that arrive from both sources when they share an event ID. The Shopify app handles that for you. Custom builds through Stape or server-side Google Tag Manager must pass the same event_id from both the browser and the server.
Check Event Match Quality
In Meta Events Manager, open your Purchase event and find Event Match Quality. It scores how well your customer data, such as email, phone, and click ID, matches Meta accounts on a 0 to 10 scale.
A low score usually means checkout is not passing email or phone. Fix that before you scale spend. Meta’s algorithm, like Google’s, can only optimize toward the purchases it can see.
Structure your first Shopping campaigns
Once the feed and tracking are clean, launch simple. A standard Shopping campaign split by custom label gives you readable data in the first 30 days.
A starting structure that works for most catalogs:
- Bestsellers. Your top products by revenue, with a dedicated budget.
- Core catalog. Everything else in stock with a healthy margin.
- Low margin or clearance. Lower bids or a higher ROAS target, so thin-margin products cannot eat the budget.
Start on Maximize conversion value without a target while the campaign builds history. Add a target ROAS once you have a few weeks of clean, deduplicated purchase data.
Review the search terms report every week in the first month. Shopping has no keywords to bid on, so negative keywords are your only way to shut out irrelevant queries.
Performance Max is the other option for product ads, and it needs the same feed and tracking. Be careful running both on the same products. Our benchmarks page notes that PMax cannibalizes Shopping in 80%+ of accounts.
We break down that decision in Google Shopping vs Performance Max: Which Should Run Your Product Ads? For how these campaigns fit into a full account, see Inside the eCommerce PPC Playbook: How We Structure $61M of Ad Spend, and the complete eCommerce PPC Playbook guide.
What clean data makes possible
Setup is not the growth strategy. It is what makes a growth strategy measurable.
Zager Guitars, a premium DTC guitar brand, grew from $300K to $1.5M in monthly revenue with iClick, a 5x increase, at an 8.4 blended ROAS. Wish Rock Relaxation, which sells massage chairs, reached a 10x ROAS on more than $80K a month in spend.

Neither result would be readable, or repeatable, on a feed with silent disapprovals or a purchase conversion counted twice. You can read the full stories in our eCommerce PPC case studies, and see how we run Shopify and DTC accounts on our eCommerce PPC agency page.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Shopify Google Shopping setup take?
Connecting the Google & YouTube app and syncing products takes about an hour. Merchant Center review of new products usually takes a few business days. Budget more time for feed cleanup and tracking audits, because fixing titles, GTINs, and duplicate conversions is where most of the work sits. A small catalog can be launch-ready within a week.
Do I need a paid feed app for Google Shopping on Shopify?
Not always. The free Google & YouTube app handles standard fields for most small and mid-size catalogs. A Merchant Center supplemental feed built in Google Sheets can add custom labels and title overrides at no cost. Paid tools like DataFeedWatch or Feedonomics earn their fee when you manage thousands of SKUs or need rule-based title rewrites.
Why is my Google Ads ROAS higher than my Shopify revenue suggests?
The most common cause is double counting. A GA4 import, an old theme tag, or a tracking app can each record the same order as a primary conversion. Check Goals, then Conversions, then Summary in Google Ads. Keep one primary purchase action and set the rest to secondary. Then compare Google Ads revenue against Shopify orders for the same week.
Is Meta Conversions API worth setting up if I mainly run Google Shopping?
Yes, if you spend on Meta at all. Shopify’s Facebook & Instagram app turns it on with one setting, Maximum data sharing, so the cost is minutes. Meta reported in April 2026 that advertisers using Conversions API for web events saw an average 17.8% lower cost per result than advertisers without it.
