What is Phrase Match?

Also known as: phrase match keyword · phrase match type

TL;DR

Phrase match is the middle keyword match type. It shows your ad on searches that include the meaning of your keyword, with words allowed before and after. After Google merged the old broad match modifier into it, phrase match became meaning-based rather than strict word-order, making it the practical workhorse between broad reach and exact control.

How phrase match works

Phrase match triggers your ad when a search includes the meaning of your keyword, allowing extra words around it. Historically it required your words in order, but Google now reads intent and word order more loosely, so phrase match behaves closer to how the old broad match modifier did. The result is a match type that captures relevant variations and additions without opening as wide as broad match, which is why many advertisers treat it as their default starting point.

The balance phrase match strikes

Broad match maximises reach and needs heavy negative maintenance. Exact match maximises control and can miss useful variations. Phrase match sits between them, capturing the searches that contain your intent while filtering out the unrelated queries broad would let through. For a new campaign or a term you want to grow carefully, phrase match often gives the best ratio of relevant volume to wasted spend, especially before you know which exact terms will convert.

It still needs negatives

Looser meaning-based matching means phrase match can still serve on queries that share words but not intent. A keyword about a premium service can match searches for a free version, or a product term can pull in unrelated informational queries. As with every match type since close variants expanded, the search terms report is the control surface. Phrase match reduces the negative workload compared to broad, but it does not remove it, and unmonitored phrase campaigns drift the same way.

How iClick uses phrase match

iClick often uses phrase match as the balanced middle of an account structure, capturing intent-relevant volume while feeding the search terms report that reveals which exact terms deserve promotion. Winners graduate to exact match for tighter control, and negatives are maintained to keep phrase from drifting into shared-word, wrong-intent queries. The three match types are run as a system, discovery through broad, balance through phrase, and control through exact, rather than as competing choices.

Phrase Match vs Exact Match

Exact match concentrates on searches closest to your keyword. Phrase match allows extra words around your intent. Phrase trades a little control for more relevant reach.

FAQ

Common questions

Exact match concentrates on searches closest to your keyword's meaning. Phrase match also requires your keyword's meaning but allows additional words before and after, giving broader but still intent-relevant reach.
