How Performance Max actually works
Performance Max collapses Google's whole inventory into one automated campaign. Instead of building separate Search, Shopping, and YouTube campaigns, you give Google asset groups, a product feed if you sell online, audience signals to hint at who converts, and a conversion goal. The automation assembles ads and places them wherever it predicts the goal is cheapest to hit. The appeal is reach and simplicity. The cost is control: you trade granular targeting and placement decisions for a black box that optimises toward whatever goal and data you give it.
Asset groups and audience signals
The two levers you actually control are asset groups and audience signals. An asset group is a themed set of headlines, descriptions, images, and videos, roughly analogous to an ad group, and building several tightly themed ones beats dumping everything into one. Audience signals are not targeting; they are suggestions that tell the model who your good customers look like so it can find more of them faster. Strong assets and precise signals are how you steer a campaign type that otherwise makes most decisions for you.
The risks PMax hides
Performance Max's opacity is its defining risk. It can cannibalize your brand search, taking credit for cheap branded clicks that would have converted anyway and inflating reported performance. It can lean on Shopping while starving other formats. And its limited reporting makes all of this hard to see without deliberate effort. Left with default settings and no guardrails, PMax will often report a flattering number while quietly absorbing demand you already owned, which is why it needs active management rather than trust.
The guardrails that make PMax honest
iClick runs Performance Max with the fences on. That means account-level and campaign brand exclusions so it cannot claim branded search, a clean, well-structured product feed since the feed is most of PMax's targeting, multiple themed asset groups rather than one, and steady scrutiny of where conversions actually come from using the reporting and scripts that pry the black box open. Performance Max earns its place with these controls. Without them it is a convenient way to overpay for demand you already had.
