Mailchimp + Google Ads: put your email list to work in search
Mailchimp holds a customer list that most businesses never use for bidding. Connecting it to Google Ads through Customer Match lets you suppress existing customers, bid for new ones, and reach lookalikes of your subscribers. This guide covers a practical setup for small and mid-size businesses that want more from an existing list.
A 47-point written audit of your Google, Meta or Shopping account, back in five business days.

- Better use of first-party data as third-party cookies fade
Setup steps
- 1
Clean and segment the list
Before syncing, clean the Mailchimp audience: remove hard bounces and unsubscribes, and segment by value where you can, such as repeat buyers versus one-time subscribers. A clean list matches at a higher rate and makes for more useful audiences.
Only include contacts you are permitted to use for advertising, and keep consent records.
- 2
Sync to Google Ads Customer Match
Export the segment and import it into Google Ads as a Customer Match audience, or use a supported connector. Google hashes the email to match against signed-in users.
Confirm the audience clears Google's minimum match-size threshold, or it will not be usable for targeting or exclusion.
- 3
Set up suppression and new-customer bidding
Apply the customer list as an exclusion on prospecting campaigns so you stop paying to advertise to people who already buy from you. Feed the same list into Google's new-customer acquisition goal so bidding can prioritize acquiring new customers.
For a small business, suppression alone often recovers noticeable wasted spend.
- 4
Keep the sync current
Schedule regular updates so new subscribers and customers flow into the audience and lapsed contacts drop out. A stale list slowly loses value, both for suppression accuracy and for lookalike quality.
Common issues
Fix. Usually a dirty list or personal versus business email mismatch. Clean bounces and unsubscribes, and accept that match rates are never one hundred percent since not every contact is a signed-in Google user.
Fix. Combine segments or broaden the list so it clears Google's minimum. Very small businesses may need to grow the list before Customer Match becomes viable.
Fix. Confirm the customer audience is applied as an exclusion on prospecting campaigns and refreshed regularly to include recent buyers.
Fix. Only upload contacts permitted for advertising use. Keep consent records and exclude anyone who has not agreed, particularly for regulated regions.
